Ask For This Hotel Perk Before You Unpack
Ask About Late Checkout Right Away:
After checking into a hotel, ask the front desk whether late checkout is available. This simple request can give you extra time on your departure day and make the end of your trip less stressful.
Hotels usually set checkout between 10:00 a.m. and noon. That may be inconvenient if your flight, train, meeting, or planned activity is scheduled much later. An approved late checkout might let you remain in the room for one or several additional hours.
Request It Before Availability Disappears:
Late checkout is often based on room availability. The hotel must leave enough time for housekeeping to prepare rooms for arriving guests. If the property is crowded or expects many new arrivals, only a limited number of extensions may be approved.
Ask about the option when you arrive, especially if you already know you have a late departure. The hotel may approve it immediately, place a note on your reservation, or tell you to confirm again the evening before checkout.
Some hotels will not make a final decision until the morning of departure. For example, Marriott tells certain members to contact the front desk that morning, while some Hyatt properties recommend confirming requests on the day of arrival. Policies can differ by brand and individual hotel. Marriott and Hyatt both explain that availability can affect approval.
Ask About Fees Before Agreeing:
Never assume late checkout is free. Some hotels provide an extra hour as a courtesy, while others charge a set fee or part of the nightly room rate. Staying several hours beyond the regular checkout time could even result in another full-night charge.
Ask three clear questions: What time can I stay until, is there a fee, and will the new checkout time appear on my reservation? Having the request documented can help prevent confusion with housekeeping or unexpected charges.
Use Your Membership Benefits:
Hotel loyalty programs may include late checkout, depending on your membership level and the property. Marriott Bonvoy offers eligible members checkout times as late as 2:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m., although some benefits depend on status and hotel type. Hilton also lists late checkout as an available benefit, but for most members it must be requested and remains subject to availability. Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors provide the current program details.
Mention your membership at check-in, even if the reservation already includes your account number.
Give Yourself A Better Final Day:
An approved late checkout gives you more than extra time in a room. It may let you sleep longer, shower after an activity, prepare for a meeting, organize your luggage, or avoid waiting for hours in a lobby or airport.
If the hotel cannot extend your stay, ask whether it can hold your luggage after checkout. Either way, discussing your departure needs as soon as you arrive gives the staff more time to help and allows you to plan your final day with fewer surprises.
