The Early Vision In Science Fiction: In the 1960s, the television show Star Trek introduced audiences to a futuristic world. On the starship Enterprise, crew members spoke to their computer as if it were a helpful assistant. The computer answered questions, provided data, and responded in a calm voice. At the time, this idea seemed far beyond existing technology. Computers were large machines that filled rooms and required trained operators.
