The Weather-Reading Hinges Inside A Pine Cone

A mature pine cone can react to changing weather even though its cells are no longer alive. In dry air, many pine cones spread their scales apart. When moisture returns, those scales bend inward again. This movement requires no nerves, muscles, or energy from the tree. It comes from the cone’s physical structure, which turns changes in humidity into motion.
