A Bare Stage With A Busy World: One person kneels on a cushion. There are no changing sets, crowded scenes, or actors waiting in the wings. Yet a conversation begins, an argument grows, and several distinct people seem to fill the stage. This is rakugo, a traditional Japanese storytelling art. The performer creates that world while remaining seated. A voice, a facial expression, and a small movement can carry the story from one character to another. The audience supplies the rooms, streets, and objects that the stage leaves out. Its simplicity asks listeners to become active partners in the performance.
