Where Kharg Island Is Located: Kharg Island is a small but strategically important island in the northern part of the Persian Gulf. It belongs to the country of Iran and lies about 25 kilometers (15 miles) off the Iranian mainland. Although the island is only about 8 kilometers (5 miles) long, it plays a major role in the global oil industry. The island’s location makes it ideal for shipping routes across the Persian Gulf. Tankers carrying oil from Iran often pass through this region on their way to markets in Asia, Europe, and other parts of the world. Because of this position, Kharg Island has become one of the most important oil export terminals in the Middle East.
