The Birth Of A Water-Born City: Venice began over 1,500 years ago when people fled to small islands in a lagoon to escape invading armies. These early settlers drove millions of wooden poles deep into the muddy seafloor to create a foundation.  Then they built their homes and businesses right on top of the water. What started as a hiding place became one of the world's most powerful trading cities during the Middle Ages.
