The Print That Begins With A Field Of Black

Image
Most drawings begin with a pale surface. The artist adds marks until an image appears. Mezzotint often reverses that approach. A printmaker prepares a metal plate that could print almost entirely black, then changes its surface to bring lighter shapes into view. The result can look surprisingly soft: a face emerging from darkness, a bright fold of fabric, or a ribbon that seems to float. These effects come from controlling how much ink the plate holds, rather than simply drawing darker outlines.
