France Allows Marriage After Death Under An Extraordinary Law

Marriage normally requires two living people to stand together and agree to become spouses. France, however, has an unusual legal exception. Under certain circumstances, a person can legally marry someone who has already died. Known as a posthumous marriage , the practice is allowed under Article 171 of the French Civil Code. It is not an ordinary marriage option, and strict requirements are designed to make sure the deceased person had truly intended to marry.
