Some Birds Can Sleep With One Eye Open
A resting duck may look awake because one eye remains open. However, the bird may actually be sleeping with half of its brain. This ability is called unihemispheric slow-wave sleep. It allows one side of the brain to rest while the other side stays more alert. This unusual form of sleep has been observed in several bird species. It helps explain how some birds balance their need for rest with the need to watch for danger.
