After a hard rain, water rushes off roofs and driveways. It may carry soil and other pollutants toward a street drain. A rain garden offers another route: it collects some of that water in a shallow planted area and lets it soak into the ground. Despite its name, a rain garden is not meant to stay flooded. It is a garden designed to handle brief periods of extra water.
