What Hiccups Really Are: Hiccups are sudden, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm. The diaphragm is a muscle that helps control breathing. When it contracts unexpectedly, it causes a quick intake of air. This air rush is then stopped by the vocal cords closing, which creates the familiar hiccup sound. Most hiccups are harmless and go away on their own within minutes.
