A Gecko’s Toes Turn Tiny Forces Into A Powerful Grip
A gecko can race up a wall, pause on smooth glass, and cross a ceiling without glue, suction cups, or sharp claws. The ability comes from an extremely detailed system covering the bottoms of its toes. Rather than depending on one strong attachment point, the gecko makes enormous numbers of tiny contacts with a surface. Each contact is weak, but together they can support the animal’s weight.
