The Sudden Stop That Makes Water Pipes Bang
A sharp bang inside a wall can sound as though someone struck the plumbing with a hammer. The noise may occur when a faucet closes or when a washing machine, dishwasher, or ice maker stops filling. The possible cause is water hammer, also called hydraulic shock. It begins when flowing water changes speed or direction too quickly, sending a pressure wave through the plumbing system.
