The Unexpected Trade-Off: When boxing gloves became mandatory in the late 1800s under the Marquess of Queensberry Rules, most people believed the sport would become much safer. The thick padding appeared to be an obvious improvement over bare-knuckle fighting, which often caused broken hands and severe facial injuries.  However, medical research has revealed a concerning pattern. While gloves successfully reduced cuts and facial fractures, the British Medical Association concluded that gloves do not reduce brain injuries and may even increase them.  The main cause of injury is acceleration and deceleration of the head, and fighters wearing gloves are able to punch harder to the head.

How Cheerleading Started As A Men's Activity: Most people today think of cheerleading as something mainly done by women, but this was not always the case. When cheerleading first began in the late 1800s, only men were allowed to participate. The activity started at Ivy League colleges during football games.  In 1898, a University of Minnesota student named Johnny Campbell became the first official cheerleader when he led organized cheers from the sidelines. Soon after, other schools created their own all-male cheerleading teams, often called "yell leaders" or "yell squads."

The Original Colors: White And Black When you watch a tennis match today, you probably notice the bright yellow-green balls bouncing across the court.  But did you know that tennis balls were not always this color? Before 1972, tennis balls were usually white.  Sometimes, black tennis balls were used, especially on grass or clay courts where white balls could blend into the background.  These early color choices were practical for players and spectators who watched matches in person, but things changed as technology advanced.
