What A Shadow Really Is: A shadow forms when light is blocked by an object. Light usually travels in straight lines from a source, such as the sun or a lamp. When something solid gets in the way, the light cannot pass through it. The dark area left behind is what we call a shadow. Shadows are not objects themselves. They are simply areas where light cannot reach. This is why you cannot pick up or hold a shadow, even though you can clearly see it.
