The Rise Of A Thriving Community: In the early 1900s, a neighborhood in Tulsa became one of the most successful Black communities in the United States. This area, known as Black Wall Street, was located in the Greenwood District. It was filled with Black-owned banks, hotels, grocery stores, theaters, and professional offices. At a time when segregation limited opportunities, residents built their own economy. Money stayed within the community, creating jobs and stability. Many families owned homes and businesses, and some became very wealthy. This level of success was rare during that era and showed what was possible with strong community support.
