The FAA requires that you be a citizen of the United States, pass a medical exam, and complete a pre-employment test. The pre-employment test consists of several assessments, including a biographical assessment, a personality assessment, and a cognitive assessment. 

Training for Air Traffic Controllers:

Once you pass the pre-employment test, you'll need to complete the FAA Academy's Air Traffic Control (ATC) training program. The ATC training program consists of two parts: the initial training and on the job training. 

The initial training is conducted at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City. It takes around 12 weeks to complete and includes classroom instruction, simulations, and practical exercises. 

After completing the initial training, you'll move on to the on the job training, which takes around two to four years to complete. During the on the job training, you'll work with experienced air traffic controllers and gain practical experience in controlling air traffic.

Air traffic controllers are well compensated for their work. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for air traffic controllers was $122,990 in May 2019. The top 10 percent of air traffic controllers earned more than $175,790 per year.
