From Medieval Pottage To Christmas Pudding
Christmas pudding did not begin as the sweet, cake-like dessert served during modern holiday dinners. Its distant ancestor was a thick medieval pottage made by boiling ingredients together in a large pot. Although often described as a soup, it was closer to a hearty porridge or stew.
