This quote, often attributed to Benjamin Franklin, reflects the idea that as we grow older, we gain wisdom and life experience, but by the time we truly understand life, much of it has already passed.

In youth, we may lack the knowledge and insight to make the best decisions or fully appreciate life.
As we age, we begin to understand things more deeply, but time has moved on, leaving us with the bittersweet realization that we can't go back and live differently with this newfound wisdom. 

Essentially, it highlights the regret of not knowing what we know now when we were younger.
