What You Need To Know About Best Buy’s TV Recycling Fees
Disposing of old TVs can be confusing and expensive.
Best Buy offers a recycling program to help customers safely get rid of unwanted televisions, but there are fees and rules you should know before you go.
Best Buy charges a $29.99 fee to recycle most TVs in-store. This includes tube TVs up to 31 inches, portable TVs, and flat-panel TVs (LCD, LED, plasma) up to 50 inches.
If your TV is an Insignia or Dynex brand (Best Buy’s own brands) and is 50 inches or smaller, you can recycle it for free. There is a limit of two TVs per household per day.
The recycling fee and rules can change depending on where you live. For example, in California, there is no drop-off fee for TV recycling at Best Buy.
In Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, you pay the $29.99 fee, but you get a $30 Best Buy gift card in return, making it essentially free. Connecticut stores only accept Insignia and Dynex TVs for recycling.
If you want Best Buy to pick up your old TV from your home, there are two main options. If you buy a new TV and have it delivered, Best Buy will haul away your old one for $59.99.
If you just want them to take your old TV (without buying a new one), the Standalone Haul-Away service costs $199.99 for up to two large items, like TVs or appliances. This service also includes unlimited smaller electronics.
Recycling TVs is expensive because they contain hazardous materials and are heavy to transport. Best Buy says the fees help cover the rising costs of safely recycling electronics.
The program is designed to be sustainable so that they can keep offering it in the future.
Best Buy accepts most TVs up to 50 inches for recycling, including old tube TVs, LCD, LED, and plasma models.
Larger TVs and some specialty items may not be accepted. Always check with your local store before bringing in your TV to avoid surprises.
Remove any personal data or accessories from your TV before recycling.
Check your state’s rules on the Best Buy website.
